Just a box

Plain Kate is making a late break towards The Night Girl in the fantasy duel, having reached 41750 words. We’ll have to get James to update us about his proflictivity, but I think that’s still at least a thousand words back.

Best 100-odd words today:

Kate nudged the box with her foot. It scraped over the deck. She’d thought it would either lean into her like an animal or stand fast like a lead casket. But it was just a box. She picked it up and set in on the bunk. In the bunched blankets it looked bigger than it should have, but it was just a box. It had butt joints – the simplest of corners – but they weren’t square. That made her angry. It was just a badly made little box.

Taggle sniffed at it and backed away. “I think – ” he said.

Kate lifted the lid.
