Corinna Comes

After Ovid, The Amores Elegy V

A summer afternoon, with shutters drawn,
dapples in my room like wood-light,
like an evening or a dawn
of long shadows.
Through this modest light, reserved, Corinna comes:
her hair down, her shift loosened.
Linen that fine is no barrier.
She hits me but not hard
and consents then to be conquered.
